Bayern scraped into the DFB Cup second round on penalties after an almighty 120-minute tussle with courageous third division outfit Burghausen.

The 11,582 packed into the permanent and temporary stands at the Wacker Arena saw the visitors pepper the home goal with shots in the first half, only to find stand-in keeper Manuel Riemann in blinding form.

The best pair of a host of chances fell to Miroslav Klose, but the Germany international mis-hit with the goal at his mercy, before Riemann somehow blocked from point-blank range.

Miro’s leveller

It looked as though Munich might rue the missed opportunities when home striker Thomas Neubert looped a header over Oliver Kahn to hand the minnows a shock 62nd minute opener with only their second shot to Bayern’s thirty or so, but Klose restored parity and sent the game into extra-time with a powerful header eleven minutes from time.

Late sub Daniel Van Buyten declined two gilt-edged chances to settle the issue with three of the additional thirty minutes remaining, leaving the outcome to be settled on penalties.

The 13-times winners were within a well-aimed spot-kick of a shock exit in a nerve-shredding shoot-out, but Kahn saved Burghausen’s last two penalties to earn a victory which in normal circumstances should have been wrapped up long before.

Strong line-up

Despite the absence of Luca Toni, Willy Sagnol, Lukas Podolski, Jan Schlaudraff and Valerien Ismael, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld’s starting line-up oozed class as Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery returned from injury and Marcell Jansen was declared fit to play at left-back.

Martin Demichelis earned the second central defender’s berth alongside Lucio and Hamit Altintop was preferred to Jose Sosa on the right flank, with Ze Roberto and Mark van Bommel providing the midfield platform to launch Klose and Ribery on forays forward.

Dominant visitors

Just 17 seconds had passed when Ribery flashed a drive inches wide of the left-hand upright, and Riemann made his first save from Altintop on three minutes, but there was almost a shock opening when busy Hungarian midfielder Levente Schultz forced Oliver Kahn into a smart save at the foot of the post.

But the Bundesliga side seized the game by the scruff of the neck after the quarter hour as the third division team pulled bodies back behind the ball, and chances began to fall at approximately two-minute intervals. Riemann saved well from Altintop (twice), Van Bommel, Ribery and Klose, before the World Cup leading scorer’s two best chances also went begging.

The 18-year-old reserve keeper still found time to deny Ze and fist away a Schweinsteiger free-kick before the game arrived at the interval goalless, and the youngster was at it again in the period after the break, denying Jansen, Lucio and Ribery in quick succession before the hour was up.

Neubert stuns Reds

Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß had already lamented his side’s profligacy in a half-time interview, and the official must have felt a terrible sense of foreboding when Neubert rose unchallenged to flick Ronald Schmidt’s free-kick past Kahn after 62 minutes.

Ribery shaved the crossbar from a free-kick and Van Bommel hit a post as the favourites sought a way back, Sosa replacing Ze and Christian Lell taking over from Jansen as the Reds upped the tempo.

The long-overdue equaliser finally arrived from a set play when Klose met Ribery’s 79th minute corner with a firm header to leave Riemann beaten for the first time, but the youngster’s heroics continued in a hectic end to normal time, the keeper saving well from Lucio and Lahm to earn his side a further 30 minutes in the limelight.

Dramatic finish

Van Bommel and Thomas Schultz traded efforts in a first period of extra-time characterised by increasingly heavy legs on both sides, Klose and Ribery denied more than once by desperate defending and a tendency to over-complicate.

Sub David Solga tested Kahn and Lucio did likewise with Riemann as the final 15 minutes picked up pace, with a let-off for the Reds when Schultz drove wide from a promising position. Hitzfeld sent on Van Buyten as an auxiliary striker for the dying minutes, but the Belgian proved he was only an emergency option by side-footing wide of a gaping goal with three minutes to play.

The match duly went to a tense shoot-out, both keepers saving twice but Bayern just about holding their nerve to book a place in the next round.
