Bremen 1 Bayern 4
Ribery at the double as Reds impress
Bayern gave notice of intent to their rivals with an inventive and flexible display in coming from behind to knock out the League Cup holders.
The vast majority of the 51,300 sell-out crowd stayed behind at the LTU Arena in Düsseldorf to watch the second match of the day's quarter-final double-header, and the fans were rewarded with four goals in the first half as Bayern roared back from an early setback when Tim Borowski opened for Bremen on nine minutes.
Convincing victoryThe men in red hit their stride midway through the half with an impressive display of attacking versatility, resulting in well-taken goals for Bastian Schweinsteiger, Hamit Altintop and Franck Ribery.
The French star signing completed his brace from the penalty spot nine minutes after half-time, before the rigours of pre-season and the high-tempo first hour caused both sides to shift down a couple of gears.
The thoroughly convincing win sees Bayern through to a semi-final meeting with Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart in midweek, certain to be another good barometer of the side's form in the run-up to the league restart.
Flexible five in midfieldWith his options up front still restricted by the absence of the injured Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski and Jan Schlaudraff, Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld opted to amend his starting formation for the first serious test of the new campaign.
On paper, the team took on a 4-3-2-1 'Christmas Tree' shape with Altintop, Zé Roberto and Franck Ribéry anchoring the midfield, and Schweinsteiger and Mark van Bommel tucked in behind lone striker Miro Klose.
In practice, Bayern's midfield five was a much more fluid affair, Schweinsteiger and Ribery taking turns to hug the left flank, Ze and Van Bommel alternating in a classic holding role, and Altintop often pursuing the tracks of a old-time right-half.
Reds recoverHowever, twenty minutes had elapsed before the Munich motor began firing on all cylinders as Werder's midfield of Torsten Frings, Borowski and former Mainz man Leon Andreasen strong-armed their way to the better of the early exchanges. Borowski was on hand to open the scoring, capitalising on Lucio's half-clearance after Clemens Fritz had scampered clear down the right.
But Bayern eased into the driving seat midway through the half, Schweinsteiger nodding home the 24th-minute equaliser from close range after Bremen keeper Tim Wiese could only parry Klose's bullet header from Philipp Lahm's cross.
Franck on targetThe Bavarians were ahead just three minutes later, Altintop battering a screamer into the top corner from fully 25 yards after Ribery's neat jink and dink on the left touchline.
Wiese did well to beat out Klose's 32nd minute header, but the Reds were not to be denied for long and Ribery made it three after a diagonal ball in from the increasingly effective Marcell Jansen had caused pandemonium in the Bremen box.
It could have been four before the interval, but Wiese coped capably with long-range efforts from Altintop and Ribery, and Klose narrowly failed to connect with Ze`s pass.
Over as a contestIt was four less than ten minutes after the interval when Pierre Womé blatantly handled in the area following Klose's lob from a sweeping Ribery thrust from right to left, the Frenchman himself stepping up to convert from the spot.
That meant the game was finished as a contest and the pace dropped significantly with some tired legs on display. Andreas Ottl, Sandro Wagner and Christian Lell took over from Van Bommel, Ribery and Schweinsteiger in the last half-hour as Bayern comfortably ushered the game to a satisfactory close.
