Bayern have successfully negotiated their first serious sporting challenge of the new season as Ottmar Hitzfeld’s men registered a hard-earned 4-0 victory away to Swiss second division outfit Schaffhausen on Wednesday evening.

A 7,300 capacity crowd at the Breite stadium saw Bayern make light of their obvious weariness from a series of punishing training routines over the last few days with a determined display featuring flashes of footballing brilliance. New signings were responsible for all the goals. Zé Roberto opened the scoring on 37 minutes, before Luca Toni (40, 63) and Miroslav Klose (51) completed the victory, which also saw Marcell Jansen make his debut for Germany’s most successful club in the second half.

Line-up to grace the Bundesliga

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s starting line-up hinted at the seriousness with which the head coach approached the friendly, the General sending out a team which could yet represent the club for the Bundesliga restart on 11 August. Franck Ribéry and Jose Ernesto Sosa occupied the wing positions, Mark van Bommel and Zé Roberto filled the central midfield area, with Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni up front.

Despite an arduous morning workout, the visitors began brightly and chances fell to Hamit Altintop (11), Sosa (12), Zé Roberto (14) and Klose (16). Ribéry was in the thick of the action in the next phase with a curler which Schaffhausen keeper Reto Bolli scrambled over the bar, before Klose (23) and Toni (32) came within inches of opening the scoring.

Zé Roberto finally netted the long overdue first goal on 37 minutes with a deflected free-kick from the edge of the area. Munich were celebrating again just three minutes later after Klose recovered possession on the goal line and fed Toni, who made no mistake from 12 yards to double the advantage.

Toni was only half a yard short of extending the lead from another Klose lay-off after 41 minutes, before the commendably eager home side, doing their utmost to match Bayern physically but outclassed in terms of skill and pace, finally tested Oliver Kahn with a Carlos da Silva shot a minute from the interval.

Ribéry-Toni-Klose

Bayern emerged after half-time with three new players in their ranks, but it was Ribéry, Toni and Klose who caught the eye on 51 minutes, as the Frenchman released the Italian for the German to make it three from close range. A near carbon copy followed shortly afterwards, Klose this time setting up Ribéry to cross for Toni to slot home from point-blank range.

The men in red eased back now, the rigours of the training camp beginning to take their toll, and although the tireless Ribéry came close with a free-kick four minutes from time, the score remained 4-0 for the Bavarian giants.
